(Kenora, ON and International Falls, MN) September 13, 2019). With more than 40 lake associations in the Rainy-Lake of the Woods watershed, there is great value in gathering together to share successes and challenges. As part of the International Watershed Coordination Program in this basin, the third Binational Lake Association Network Event will take place September 19 near International Falls, Minnesota, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Thunderbird Lodge on Rainy Lake.

This is where watershed neighbors from both sides of the border can meet, discuss common issues and take home fresh, new ideas to their associations. Local resource agencies also are invited to provide information on resources and programs that may be of interest.

This year, there are three featured speakers.

Matt Julius, professor of biological sciences at St. Cloud State University will speak on “What a long strange trip it’s been: The History and Future of Aquatic Ecosystem Management with Special Focus on the Lake of the Woods Watershed.”

Shannon Martin, citizen lake monitoring specialist with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, will speak on “Feeling Trendy? Why both short and long-term volunteers are valuable to the water clarity trend analysis process.”

Kat Kavanaugh, executive director with the nonprofit Water Rangers, will speak on “Designing Test kits and Data Platforms to Empower the Crowd.”

Participants also will get to take part in a virtual reality video where they become algae in a river that’s being polluted by metals, courtesy of Julius.
