Join us for the 2023 series of free “Ask An Expert” webinars, as we study our watershed and learn how to protect our natural resource assets. Our lineup of experts have a wealth of knowledge and this is your chance to connect directly with them.
Seminars will consist of an expert presentations followed by a Q&A opportunity.
For our final Ask an Expert session of 2023, held November 27 at 1 pm CST, International Watershed Coordinator Teika Newton gave a tour of the International Watershed Coordination program. What is this program and what does the International Watershed Coordinator do?
Together with Amanda Bell (United States Geological Survey), we looked at the partnerships and projects the IWC supports. We discussed current projects underway through the International Multi-Agency Arrangement, the International Rainy Lake of the Woods Watershed Board, and we got a glimpse ahead at some of the things that we’re already considering for 2024 and beyond.
On November 8 at 1:00 PM CST we hosted a session with field researchers Anna Baker (United States Geological Survey), Shane Bowe (Red Lake Department of Natural Resources) and Dr. Adam Heathcote (Science Museum of Minnesota) who shared with us the field work they’ve done this year, looking at stream sediments in Rainy River and its tributaries, and algae toxins in the St Croix watershed, and studying wild rice in the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods.
After a summer break, the 2023 Ask an Expert seminars resumed in the fall. On September 11 at 1:00 PM CDT, we hosted a session focused on understanding how climate change is impacting the Rainy – Lake of the Woods watershed, with Dr. Scott Higgins (IISD-Experimental Lakes Area), Dr. Clare Nelligan (Queen’s University), and Dr. Leif Olmanson (University of Minnesota) as they explore the ways in which climate change is already affecting the Rainy-Lake of the Woods basin.
Join us as we dig into at efforts underway across the watershed to identify, monitor and respond to aquatic invasive species. This webinar, held June 5 at 1 pm CDT, featured Chris Herc (Grand Council Treaty #3 Territorial Planning Unit), Ashley Hoffmeister, Luc Boucha, Emilia Mastromatteo & Tessa Penner (Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association) and Amanda Weberg (Cook County Soil & Water Conservation District).
