Shane and Kayla Bowe from the Red Lake Department of Natural Resources were recipients of the 2025 Larry Kallemeyn Award, presented the award on behalf of the community of scientists and resource managers from the United States and Canada working in our watershed. The Kallemeyn Award recognizes outstanding scientific contributions to the watershed.

The first-ever team recipients, as well as the only married couple ever to receive the Kallemeyn Award, Kayla and Shane Bowe were recognized for their instrumental role in developing tribal connections with the Lake of the Woods groups through their efforts in monitoring, watershed planning, multi-agency coordination, and their participation and leadership in working groups.

Kayla and Shane have contributed invaluable service and leadership to the International Multi-agency Working Group, Forum Organizing Committee, and contributions to the State of the Basin Reports and Minnesota's Lake of the Woods Excess Nutrients TMDL. Their work includes studies of wild rice, nutrient detection limit and cyanotoxin monitoring, training Tribal college students, and maintaining impressive water quality monitoring programs on the Upper and Lower Red Lakes and on Lake of the Woods tribal lands on the Northwest Angle. Although the Bowes were not able to attend the reception dinner in person, they shared poignant remarks via video, noting the indelible influence Nolan Baratono had on their lives, mentoring them professionally and welcoming them into the broader watershed community at past Forums.
