The Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum –
a meeting of all the minds in our basin.


Since 2004, the annual International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum has been a strategic incubator for cross-border research, management collaboration, networking and communication. 

The Foundation leads a partnership of agencies to organize the Forum each year.  Attended each year by upwards of 160 research and resource managers, the Forum is the "hub" for all groups working to ensure the future ecological integrity of the waters of the Rainy-Lake of the Woods Basin.

Two days of presentations will be organized into themed sessions. We encourage submissions on any aspect of research and management related to the Rainy-Lake of the Woods watershed ecosystem, but especially invite valuable inisghts on the following;

Kallemeyn Award

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Kallemeyn Award. The 2026 Kallemeyn Award will be presented at the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum during the Foundation reception (TBC March 11).

Nominations will be accepted until December 15, 2025.

The Kallemeyn Award is presented annually by the Foundation to an individual who has demonstrated in the Rainy-Lake of the Woods watershed:

  • Outstanding professional achievement in scientific research or resource management.
  • Significant contributions to collaborative and cooperative approaches to research or resource management internationally.

The Award will be presented at the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum when there’s a deserving recipient as determined by the selection committee.

Wilson Stewardship Award

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Wilson Stewardship Award. The Wilson Award will be presented at the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum during the Foundation reception (TBC: March 11, 2026).

The Wilson Stewardship Award is presented by the Foundation to individuals, groups, or projects that have made significant contributions to environmental stewardship in the Rainy-Lake of the Woods watershed through:

  • Education, outreach, civic engagement and participation in stewardship initiatives or program development.
  • Projects or programs focused on protection, restoration, preservation or reduction of environmental impact and development of sustainable practices.

The Award will be presented at the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum when there’s a deserving recipient as determined by the selection committee.

Deborah Battigelli Memorial Fund - Student Support

Limited travel support may be available to assist postgraduate students to present their research at the Forum, from the Deborah Battigelli Memorial Fund at the Foundation.  Support is typically offered for up to one student per year.  To receive support through the fund, a candidate's research abstracts must be accepted for presentation at the Forum.  To apply, contact Todd Sellers, Executive Director, This email address is being protected from spambots. The Battigelli family established the Deborah Battigelli Memorial Fund at LOWWSF to honour Deborah’s love of life at the lake and her interest to preserve the lake area for future generations to continue to enjoy what she loved.  The Fund assists the up-and-coming generation of scientists with their research on our lakes with limited travel support to present their research at the Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum.

Teika Newton Receives 2026 Clean50 Honour

LOWWSF is pleased to announce that our Executive Director, Teika Newton, has been named as one of the 2026 Clean50 Honourees, joining an esteemed cohort of Canada's environmental and clean economy leaders. Teika received the award as an Environmental NGO Advocate, alongside five other peers, during a ceremony in Toronto in mid-October.  

Gavin Pitchford, CEO of the Delta Management Group that hosts the Clean50 awards explains, “Canada’s Clean50 Awards are announced annually by Delta Management Group and the Clean50 organization to recognize those 50 individuals or small teams, from 16 different categories, who have done the most to contribute to the clean economy in Canada over the past 2 years.”

Awards are presented at the annual Clean50 Summit where current and past years' honourees gather in person for one very full day in Toronto. The event provides important networking opportunities and centres on strategic discussions to tackle some of today's thorniest and most urgent environmental challenges, though a lens that is sensitive to social and economic impacts. This year, many participants were focused on ensuring action to meaningfully address climate change remains a priority in times of geopolitical uncertainty and as Canada invests in nation-building projects. The theme of 'valuing water' was also central to discussions, as it is to our mission at LOWWSF. 

Teika was recognized for her important contributions to advancing international water and climate diplomacy, specifically focused on her work with LOWWSF over the past two years. The award recognition noted, in particular, the support she and the Foundation have provided to the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board to deliver more than a dozen water quality management and restoration projects. Also noted were the annual International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Forum, which provides a crucial space for cross-border collaboration in watershed science and policy, as well as the role LOWWSF plays in hosting and coordinating the International Multi-Agency Arrangement - the table where water resources managers and field personnel from 30+ agencies of federal, provincial, state, and Indigenous governments in Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota gather to share information, co-create water resources management and restoration strategies, and learn from one another.

These successes are the result of the incredible, small-but-mighty LOWWSF team, including Meghan Mills (International Watershed Coordinator), former long-time Executive Director and now Board Director, Todd Sellers and his fellow Directors. Described by Clean50 as a team "small enough to fit in a canoe with room to spare", our work "has a continental reach... [that makes] an outsized splash."
